17 countries to host this year’s Hanbok Culture Week

Hanbok cultural events have been opened in 36 cities of 17 countries including Seoul.

The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and Korea Craft and Design Foundation on Oct. 16 announced the hosting of this year’s Hanbok Culture Week from Oct. 17-23.

Marking its fifth edition this year, the event comes on the third week of every October to spread Hanbok culture through programs such as exhibitions, interactive programs and fashion shows.

Events like that for trying on Hanbok are being held at HiKR Ground, a tourism promotion center around Cheonggyecheon Stream in Seoul’s Jongno-gu District. An exhibition there displays children’s Hanbok and related outfits worn by the cast of the hit Netflix drama “Kingdom,” and an interactive event allows visitors to film K-pop content while wearing Hanbok.

Through reservations, visitors can also make knotted bracelets and keychains and color Hanbok miniature replicas.
A ceremony granting certificates of gratitude for those promoting the traditional clothing will be held as a commemorative event to encourage individuals and organizations who have contributed to the development of Hanbok culture. The event is slated for Oct. 21 at 5:30 p.m. on the fourth floor of HiKR Ground.

On the same day, a commemorative fashion show and performance starring four acts including Dynamic Duo, Sole and Hatfelt are scheduled at 6 p.m. at the first-floor outdoor venue under the theme “A Flower that Does Not Wither: Hanbok” (unofficial translation).

This year’s Hanbok Culture Week will see the governments of Busan; Asan, Chungcheongnam-do Province; Gokseong-gun County, Jeollanam-do Province; Namwon, Iksan and Jeonju, Jeollabuk-do Province; Sangju, Gyeongsangbuk-do Province; and Miryang, Gyeongsangnam-do Province, host programs combining Hanbok with their regional cultures.

The Hanbok event will also be held in Seattle and Portland, Oregon, in the U.S.; Vancouver, Canada; Ankara, Turkiye; and New Delhi, India, featuring fashion shows, exclusive courses on Hanbok and exhibitions. Korean Cultural Centers in cities like Rome, Italy, Pretoria; South Africa; and Abu Dhabi, the United Arab Emirates, will also hold interactive events like trying on Hanbok and movie screenings.
