Washington: U.S. President Donald Trump announced on Wednesday that the United States is considering a potential reduction of American troops stationed in Germany. He indicated that a decision regarding this matter is expected in the "next short period of time" as he criticized European allies for their perceived lack of support in the ongoing U.S.-Israel conflict against Iran.
According to Yonhap News Agency, Trump's remarks were made in a social media post following a report by The Wall Street Journal. The report suggested that his administration is contemplating punitive measures against certain NATO members that are deemed uncooperative with U.S. efforts during the Iranian conflict. Trump's administration has expressed dissatisfaction with NATO allies, particularly over their response to the request for naval assistance in securing the Strait of Hormuz, a strategic chokepoint currently threatened by Iranian actions.
Currently, more than 36,000 U.S. troops are stationed in Germany. This potential reduction could signal a significant shift in U.S. military presence in Europe. Trump's comments reflect ongoing tensions within the NATO alliance, as he continues to press European nations to increase their military support and collaboration with U.S. operations in the Middle East.
