Arrest Warrants Issued for Suspects in Seoul Palace Graffiti Incident

SEOUL: Seoul police have sought an arrest warrant for a 17-year-old, identified by the surname Im, for vandalizing the walls of the historic Gyeongbok Palace. Im is accused of spray-painting graffiti over a 44-meter stretch of the palace walls last weekend. The graffiti included phrases promoting illegal video-sharing platforms and was also found on nearby Seoul Metropolitan Agency walls.

According to the Seoul Jongno Police Station, Im and a 16-year-old female accomplice were apprehended at their homes in Suwon. While the female suspect was released, police have requested an arrest warrant for Im on charges of violating the Cultural Heritage Protection Act. During investigations, the suspects revealed they committed the act following instructions from a stranger on social media, who promised payment for the vandalism. The police are expanding their investigations to identify the instigator of the crime. Additionally, an arrest warrant has been sought for another suspect in his 20s, involved in a similar act of vandalism on the palace walls, in a suspected copycat crime.
