The ASEAN Ministerial Meeting in Bangkok agreed to push forward Bangkok Declaration on Combating Marine Debris in ASEAN Region to protect marine environment, said the Cambodian Ministry of Environment in a news release.
H.E. Sao Sopheap, Cambodian Secretary of State for Environment, led a Cambodian delegation to attend the Special ASEAN Ministerial Meeting on Marine Debris hosted by Thailand's Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment in Bangkok yesterday and attended by over 100 counterparts and experts from ASEAN nations, EU, Japan, Korea, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, the U.S., and many international organisations.
The meeting discussed strategies to combat marine debris and framework of actions on marine debris. The meeting also called for technical and financial supports to implement these strategies.
A joint statement of the meeting highlighted the agreements to submit the draft on Bangkok Declaration on Combating Marine Debris in ASEAN Region to the ASEAN leaders for approval in the 34th ASEAN Summit, which will be held in June. This declaration highlighted ASEAN's commitment to protect marine environment and strengthen regional cooperation in dealing with marine debris.
