Bad marriage link to high blood pressure

A bad relationship with your wife can cause high blood pressure, a study reveals.

A University of Michigan research team has shown that a wife’s stress, especially in a difficult relationship, influences her husband’s blood pressure.

“We were particularly fascinated that husbands were more sensitive to wives’ stress than the reverse, especially given all of the work indicating that wives are more affected by the marital tie,” lead researcher Kira Birditt said.

The team asked about 1,300 married and co-habiting adults a series of questions including: “Does the association between negative relationship quality and blood pressure vary by gender?”

“We speculate that this finding may result from husbands’ greater reliance on wives for support, which may not be provided when wives are more stressed,” Birditt said.

The study result was published in the Journals of Gerontology.
