BUCHEON, South Korea – The Bucheon International Fantastic Film Festival (BIFAN) has announced the addition of a new award category for films created using artificial intelligence. This introduction marks a first for South Korea’s film festivals, recognizing the growing influence of AI technology in film production.

According to Yonhap News Agency, the AI Film International Competition category will debut in the festival’s 28th edition this July. Films will be judged not only on the use of AI technology but also on artistic merit and the messages they convey. BIFAN’s director, Shin Chul, highlighted that the category aims to empower creators with limited budgets to produce films using AI, extending the festival’s long-standing support for new media like virtual reality. BIFAN, established in 1997 and located about 20 kilometers west of Seoul, is South Korea’s largest genre film festival and will run from July 4 to 14 this year.
