Seoul: In a significant event in Korean history, Choi Je-u founded the Donghak movement on April 5, 1860. This indigenous Korean religion combined elements of Christianity, Confucianism, Buddhism, and Taoism while advocating for humanitarian values. The movement emerged as a response to the oppressive feudal system and corrupt officials of the Joseon Dynasty, particularly in South Jeolla Province, where the rural economy was suffering due to heavy taxation and the removal of rice by Japanese forces. Donghak opposed Western cultural influence and supported Korean beliefs like "pungsu" and "innaecheon." Despite its efforts, Choi Je-u faced execution for allegedly misleading the public with his religious theories.
According to Yonhap News Agency, Heungseon Daewongun, father of King Gojong, became the de facto ruler in 1864 as his son ascended to power at the age of 12. He initiated ambitious reforms, removing entrenched families from key positions and replacing them with non-partisan officials. He also dismantled numerous shrines that were misused for partisan purposes, sparing only those recognized for their academic value. Despite his reform efforts, he faced criticism and was ousted from power in 1873, only to briefly return later.
In other historical events, South Korea marked Arbor Day in 1949 and established diplomatic relations with Greece in 1961. A significant incident occurred in 2009 when North Korea launched a long-range rocket, claiming it carried a "communications satellite." However, South Korea and the United States reported the failure of the satellite to reach orbit, as the rocket and payload fell into the Pacific Ocean. More recently, in 2018, an F-15K Slam Eagle crashed in Chilgok, resulting in the tragic loss of two pilots, marking the first such crash since 2006.
In 2019, South Korea declared a state of disaster following a massive blaze in Goseong, approximately 160 kilometers northeast of Seoul, which affected five cities and counties along the northeastern coast. The fire claimed one life and injured at least 35 people.
