SEOUL, South Korea's Defense Minister Song Young-moo held talks with a top Turkish military official this week to discuss ways to expand bilateral defense cooperation and exchanges, his office said Thursday.

During the talks with Yasar Guler, the chief of general staff, on Tuesday (Turkey time), Song called for joint efforts to deepen the two countries' cooperation in the arms industry and develop their military partnership through regular dialogue.

Song also expressed expectations for Turkey's continued support for Seoul's efforts to achieve denuclearization and a lasting peace regime on the Korean Peninsula, his ministry said in a press release.

Guler said in response that his country will offer continued support until the North's denuclearization is achieved.

On the same day, Song paid his respects to Turkish troops killed during the 1950-53 Korean War during his visit to a memorial park in Ankara. During the conflict, Turkey sent a total of 21,212 troops. Of them, 966 were killed in action or in other ways.
