Seoul: The government has initiated a working group in collaboration with Samsung Electronics Co., Hyundai Motor Group, and other major companies to further a national effort aimed at developing an artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure. This initiative will leverage 260,000 graphics processing units (GPUs) provided by U.S. chip giant Nvidia Corp., as confirmed by officials on Thursday.
According to Yonhap News Agency, the inaugural meeting of this collective, chaired by Second Vice Science Minister Ryu Je-myung, follows Nvidia’s recent announcement to supply up to 260,000 Blackwell GPUs to the South Korean government and its leading conglomerates. During the meeting, top executives from Samsung, Hyundai, SK Telecom Co., and Naver Cloud engaged in discussions on strategies for implementing the GPU plan and explored avenues for enhanced cooperation to bolster the nation’s AI ecosystem.
The participants have concurred on establishing a continuous coordination system via the new working group, which will convene on a regular basis. Nvidia’s plan, revealed last month, entails deploying up to 260,000 GPUs in South Korea in collaboration with the government and major corporations to construct large-scale AI factories in the region.
The infrastructure based on Nvidia’s Blackwell GPUs is expected to increase South Korea’s overall installed AI GPU capacity from approximately 65,000 to over 300,000 units. This growth positions the country as one of the world’s leading hubs for AI computing outside the United States.
