Seoul - South Korea's Fair Trade Commission (FTC) has initiated an on-site inspection at the offices of AliKorea, the operator of Alibaba Group's AliExpress in South Korea, amid rising concerns over potential consumer rights violations. The scrutiny by the FTC comes in the wake of escalating complaints from South Korean consumers regarding the service provided by the online retail giant.

According to Yonhap News Agency, the FTC's move last week to examine AliKorea's Seoul office and collect relevant documents was driven by a significant uptick in consumer grievances. Complaints lodged against AliExpress surged to 465 in the last year, up from 93 the previous year, highlighting issues such as misdeliveries and problems with order cancellations and delivery information. This increased scrutiny occurs against a backdrop of AliExpress's expanding user base in South Korea, which has grown to over 7 million. While the FTC has not confirmed an ongoing investigation, it has pledged a rigorous response to any identified legal breaches, emphasizing its commitment to enforcing consumer protection in the burgeoning e-commerce sector.
