SEOUL, Sept. 3 (Yonhap) -- Marc Knapper, former acting U.S. ambassador to South Korea, has assumed a working-level position at the State Department dealing with Korea affairs, a diplomatic source said Monday.

Knapper, a career diplomat, recently returned to his country, having served as Charge d'Affaires ad interim at the U.S. Embassy in Seoul for 1 1/2 years following the departure of Mark Lippert picked by former President Barack Obama.

In July, the Trump administration sent Harry Harris, a top naval commander, to Seoul as its ambassador.

Knapper is currently working as acting deputy assistant secretary of state for Korea and Japan issues, according to the source.
