Ontario: LG Energy Solution Ltd. announced that its Canadian arm, NextStar Energy, hosted an opening ceremony for a new battery production line in Ontario. The event marks a significant step in the affiliate's efforts to bolster its presence in the North American energy storage system (ESS) market.
According to Yonhap News Agency, the ceremony took place on Thursday, with key figures such as South Korean Industry Minister Kim Jung-kwan, Ontario Premier Doug Ford, and Kim Dong-myung, CEO of LG Energy Solution, in attendance. The new facility, operational since November, is focused on producing advanced battery cells tailored for next-generation ESS products. This initiative aims to meet the increasing demand from the artificial intelligence (AI) industry.
LG Energy Solution has also revealed plans to acquire full ownership of NextStar Energy by June. The company was initially launched as a joint venture with multinational automaker Stellantis N.V. Kim Dong-myung expressed confidence in the decision to solely own NextStar Energy, highlighting its role as Canada's first large-scale battery manufacturing facility and its importance in advancing the nation's electrification efforts.
Since its inception in 2022, NextStar Energy has invested 5 trillion won (US$3.38 billion) and has employed approximately 1,300 staff members, underscoring its commitment to innovation and growth in the energy sector.
