SEOUL, A marine colonel is under investigation over sexual harassment allegations, a marine official said Thursday, the latest in a series of scandals involving senior military officials.

Last week, the defense ministry's Criminal Investigation Command launched a probe into the case following a report that the colonel, whose name was withheld from the media, touched the body of a female subordinate against her will last month.

"In line with the investigation outcome, we will sternly deal with the case and craft measures to prevent a recurrence," the marine official said on condition of anonymity.

In response to the unceasing series of sexual abuses in the military, Defense Minister Song Young-moo has said that "rooting out sexual violence by those in power is a new task of our times."
