Seoul: North Korea fired multiple short-range ballistic missiles toward the East Sea on Sunday, South Korea's military said. The Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) reported that the missiles were launched from the Sinpho area in the North at around 6:10 a.m. and traveled approximately 140 kilometers.
According to Yonhap News Agency, the South Korean military is closely monitoring North Korea's movements under a South Korea-U.S. combined defense posture. The JCS emphasized its readiness to respond to any provocation. Intelligence agencies from South Korea and the U.S. are tracking the launch activities and have shared pertinent information with Japan.
In April, North Korea launched multiple short-range ballistic missiles in a rare pair of launches on the same day. The state media later reported that these launches included a tactical ballistic missile equipped with a cluster bomb warhead, asserting its capability to destroy any target within range. Additionally, North Korea conducted tests of an electromagnetic weapon system and carbon fiber bombs, along with verifying a mobile short-range anti-aircraft missile system, suggesting that the recent launches could be related to such weapons tests.
