N. Korea’s Kim Strengthens Ties with Russia on Victory Day

Pyongyang: North Korean leader Kim Jong-un has reaffirmed his commitment to strengthening ties with Russia in a congratulatory message to Russian President Vladimir Putin on the occasion of Russia's Victory Day. The message, reported by state media, emphasized Pyongyang's intention to prioritize and deepen its relationship with Moscow. Kim extended his congratulations on the 81st Victory Day, expressing satisfaction with the shared history of independence and prosperity between the two nations.

According to Yonhap News Agency, Kim highlighted the commitment of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) to uphold the alliance-like comprehensive strategic partnership established with Russia. He reiterated the North's dedication to fulfilling obligations under the inter-state treaty with Russia. The treaty, signed in June 2024, marked a revival of the two countries' Cold War-era military alliance, leading to increased military support and cooperation from North Korea.

Following the treaty, North Korea deployed approximately 15,000 combat troops to support Russia in its conflict with Ukraine and expanded collaboration in various areas. On the same day, Russia's acting ambassador to North Korea, Vladimir Topeha, paid tribute to Soviet soldiers at the Liberation Tower in Pyongyang. The visit, which coincided with Russia's Victory Day, included ambassadors from China, Brazil, Cuba, and Vietnam, along with North Korean foreign affairs officials.

The Liberation Tower, erected in 1947, serves as a monument honoring the Red Army's role in liberating Korea from Japanese rule. Pyongyang also marked the occasion by sending honor guards and military bands to the event, underscoring the significance of the historical ties between North Korea and Russia.
