SEOUL, Nearly 43 million South Koreans are eligible to vote in the upcoming local elections, the election watchdog said Saturday.

The National Election Commission (NEC) said it has completed drawing up the list of voters for the upcoming mayoral and gubernatorial elections, set to be held June 13.

The number of voters came to 42,907,715, up 3.9 percent from around 41.3 million in the last local elections held four years earlier, according to the NEC.

People in their 40s and 50s made up the largest group of voters, accounting for more than 40 percent of the total, while those in their 70s made up the smallest age group, 12.0 percent of all voters.

The number of foreign-born voters more than doubled from 48,428 in 2014 to 106,205, partly reflecting a recent increase in the number of South Koreans tying the knot with foreign spouses.
