Seoul: Chung Jung-yong, the newly appointed head coach for Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors, has set an ambitious target for his first season at the helm of the defending South Korean football champions. "I will grab a new star," Chung declared during the K League 1 season-opening media day, referring to the coveted championship symbol that teams earn after a victorious season.
According to Yonhap News Agency, Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors, who claimed their 10th league title in 2025 under the leadership of then-coach Gus Poyet, are ready for another triumphant run. Poyet, who led the team to a Korea Cup victory as well, stepped down in December, leaving Chung with significant shoes to fill. Despite the challenges, Chung remains confident, bolstered by strategic acquisitions like former K League 2 scoring champion Bruno Mota.
Chung emphasized the need for Jeonbuk to maintain dominance over their rivals to achieve their title aspirations. While he did not specify which teams pose the greatest threat, Daejeon Hana Citizen FC, last year's runners-up, are likely contenders. Daejeon's head coach, Hwang Sun-hong, aims to improve their performance against Jeonbuk, starting with their season opener against FC Anyang.
Rival coaches have identified Daejeon as a strong contender this season. Gangwon FC's head coach, Chung Kyung-ho, remarked on Daejeon's significant investments in players, suggesting that such spending could enhance the competitiveness of the league. Pohang Steelers' coach, Park Tae-ha, echoed this sentiment, noting that while Hwang faces pressure, it is an inherent part of the coaching role.
