Police Reveal Identity of Suspect in Gwangju Student Stabbing

Gwangju: Police have disclosed the identity of a suspect involved in the fatal stabbing of a high school student in Gwangju last week. The Gwangju Provincial Police released mug shots and detailed information about the suspect, 23-year-old Jang Yoon-gi, who is accused of murdering a 17-year-old female student and injuring another 17-year-old male student in the incident that occurred shortly after midnight on May 5.

According to Yonhap News Agency, Jang has been charged with murder and attempted murder, and the case has been transferred to the prosecution following his arrest. During his transfer, Jang expressed remorse with a brief apology but remained silent when questioned by reporters about his motives.

The police have added a charge of preparation for murder against Jang after determining that he had initially planned to murder another woman, a former colleague, before attacking the students. The woman, a Vietnamese national in her 20s, had reported Jang for stalking on May 3, prompting him to search for her. After failing to find her, he allegedly targeted the students out of anger. The male student was injured while attempting to assist the female victim, who was unknown to both of them.

Jang has reportedly told investigators that his actions were not premeditated and that he decided to commit the crime while contemplating suicide.
