VLADIVOSTOK, Russian President Vladimir Putin called for a peaceful resolution of "a regional nuclear issue" after his first summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un in Russia's Far East city of Vladivostok on Thursday.
Speaking at a dinner session with Kim, Putin also pledged to play a role in alleviating tensions on the divided peninsula.
"Russia believes that various issues as well as a regional nuclear issue should be resolved diplomatically and peacefully, and that it is the only effective way," he said.
"Russia will continue to make efforts for the reduction of tensions on the Korean Peninsula," he added.
During their summit talks that lasted for about three hours, Putin and Kim highlighted their focus on the "situation on the Korean Peninsula" in an apparent allusion to stalled nuclear negotiations with the United States.
