Seoul: The foreign ministry announced on Friday that it has conducted a simulation drill in Georgia aimed at evacuating South Koreans in the event of political unrest. This initiative is part of an ongoing effort to enhance overseas crisis response capabilities.
According to Yonhap News Agency, the drill was held on Wednesday at the South Korean Embassy in Georgia. It was a collaborative exercise with the National Fire Agency and civilian experts. The scenario involved escalating political instability in the country, necessitating the evacuation of South Korean nationals.
The ministry regularly conducts crisis response drills with overseas diplomatic missions, each based on different crisis scenarios. Earlier in April, a similar simulation was carried out in Kenya, which was based on a hypothetical hijacking of a ship by pirates.
During the drill, senior foreign ministry officials also engaged with Georgian agencies to discuss cooperation. This comes in light of a recent rise in accidents involving South Korean visitors to Georgia's mountainous regions.
