SEOUL, Genesis BBQ Co., a major South Korean fried chicken chain, said Friday that it has signed a deal with the World Food Program to donate 3 billion won (US$2.6 million), joining the U.N. agency's global campaign to achieve zero hunger.
Genesis BBQ said it will provide 600 million won to the WFP per year over the next five years. The annual donation is an amount that can meet the daily cost of living for some 590,000 hunger-stricken children, it said.
"We will steadily expand the scope of assistance for the eradication of poverty," said Genesis BBQ Chairman Yoon Hong-geun.
The WFP has launched the Zero Hunger Challenge, a global call-to-action campaign designed to eliminate hunger.
