Seoul: Samsung Electronics Co.'s union announced on Wednesday its intention to proceed with the strike scheduled for later this week, citing management's rejection of a government-mediated proposal. "The union will proceed with the legally scheduled general strike tomorrow as planned," declared the company's largest union.
According to Yonhap News Agency, the two parties have been engaged in government-mediated talks concerning performance-based bonuses. Nearly 48,000 workers are expected to participate in the 18-day strike. The South Korean government has expressed growing concerns that an extended strike could negatively impact the nation's export-driven economy, given that semiconductor exports comprise roughly 35 percent of the country's total outbound shipments.
Furthermore, global companies dependent on South Korea's semiconductor supply chain have voiced apprehensions regarding potential disruptions. The situation highlights the critical role of Samsung Electronics within the global market and the potential ramifications of a prolonged strike on international supply chains.
