Seoul Lawmaker Bae Hyun-jin Injured in Assault, Condition Stable


SEOUL: People Power Party lawmaker Rep. Bae Hyun-jin was attacked in Seoul, resulting in a non-life-threatening head injury. The assault occurred around 5 p.m. in the Gangnam district, according to a statement from Bae’s office. A male pedestrian approached Bae, confirmed her identity as the lawmaker, and then struck her on the back of the head with a rock. Bae was immediately taken to Soonchunhyang University Hospital for medical attention.



According Yonhap News Agency, Bae, aged 40 and a former television news anchor, was elected to her first term in the National Assembly in 2020 and briefly served as a spokesperson for then President-elect Yoon Suk Yeol in 2022. The attack on Bae follows a recent incident involving Lee Jae-myung, leader of the opposition Democratic Party, who was stabbed in the neck in Busan. The incident has heightened concerns over the safety of public figures in South Korea.
