Seoul Lawmaker Bae Hyun-jin Stable After Assault in Gangnam District
SEOUL: People Power Party lawmaker Rep. Bae Hyun-jin is in stable condition after sustaining a head injury from an attack by an unidentified assailant in Seoul. The incident occurred around 5 p.m. in the southern district of Gangnam. Bae’s aide reported that a male pedestrian approached Bae, confirmed her identity, and then struck her on the back of the head with a rock. Bae was promptly taken to Soonchunhyang University Hospital.
According Yonhap News Agency, Dr. Park Sukh-que, the neurosurgeon who treated Bae at the hospital, confirmed that she was in stable condition following treatment for her wound. The cut on the back of her head, approximately 1 centimeter long, did not appear to cause any protracted bleeding or fracture, but the medical team is monitoring for intracranial microbleed. Bae also reported a headache, a common symptom post-injury, which may indicate concussion symptoms.
The attack on Bae follows a recent violent incident involving Lee Jae-myung, leader of the opposition Democratic Party, who was stabbed in the neck in Busan. The string of attacks on political figures has led to widespread calls for a thorough investigation and firm response. PPP chief Han Dong-hoon, who visited Bae in the hospital, emphasized the need for a detailed inquiry into the incident and a strong stand against such acts of violence.
