Seoul Police Deny Late Actor Lee Sun-kyun’s Request for Private Questioning Prior to Apparent Suicide

SEOUL — Officials reported Thursday that late actor Lee Sun-kyun, famed for his role in "Parasite," had his request for a low-profile police questioning denied. Lee, aged 48, was discovered deceased in his vehicle near Waryong Park in central Seoul, in what seemed to be a suicide. This tragic event occurred just four days after his third police interrogation concerning drug allegations.

According to Yonhap News Agency, Lee, who faced accusations of consuming marijuana and other illegal substances at a high-end bar hostess's residence in Gangnam, had sought through his lawyer to keep his questioning away from media attention. Despite police guidelines against public exposure during investigations, Lee had been openly photographed during his appearances, intensifying media scrutiny.

The Incheon Metropolitan Police Agency, overseeing the investigation, recognized receiving Lee's request but refuted any self-initiated press notification of the questioning schedule. Chief Kim Hui-jung expressed condolences over Lee's death, asserting that the investigation was based on concrete tips and evidence. Recent developments in Lee's case include an arrest warrant for a suspected accomplice of the hostess, who is facing trial for drug-related charges.

Yoon Hee-keun, head of the National Police Agency, denied allegations that the police's handling of the case contributed to Lee's death but promised to review and amend investigative practices if necessary.
