Seoul Police Detain Suspect in Arson Case Following Apartment Fire

SEOUL — Authorities detained an individual on Monday in connection with an arson that led to a fire in a studio apartment building in Seoul, resulting in serious injury to a woman. The incident occurred in the eastern ward of Gwangjin, where the fire broke out on the third floor of a six-story building at approximately 4:38 a.m. The flames were extinguished by 5:41 a.m., following an extensive response involving 112 firefighting personnel and 27 fire vehicles.

According to Yonhap News Agency, a woman in her 20s, attempting to escape the blaze from the fourth floor, fell and sustained a serious head injury. She was promptly transported to a hospital. Additionally, two other individuals suffered minor injuries due to smoke inhalation. Despite these injuries, eight residents managed to evacuate the building without assistance.

The suspect, residing in the apartment where the fire originated, was arrested under emergency provisions on charges of arson. Initially, the suspect claimed ignorance of the fire's cause but later confessed to starting it, as stated by officials.
