Seoul Police Reject Late Actor Lee Sun-kyun’s Request for Privacy in Questioning Before Apparent Suicide

SEOUL — Officials confirmed on Thursday that the late actor Lee Sun-kyun's request for a private appearance during police questioning was denied. Lee, known for his role in "Parasite," was found dead in a suspected suicide near Waryong Park in Seoul, just days after his third interrogation for drug-related allegations.

According to Yonhap News Agency, Lee had sought through his lawyer to avoid media exposure during his questioning sessions, but the police did not accommodate this request. Despite police press guidelines prohibiting the exposure of individuals under investigation, Lee's appearances were heavily covered by the media. The Incheon Metropolitan Police Agency, which oversaw the investigation, acknowledged receiving the request but denied independently informing the press about the interrogation schedule.

Kim Hui-jung, the chief of the Incheon Metropolitan Police Agency, expressed condolences and stated that the investigation was carried out lawfully based on specific evidence. Meanwhile, Yoon Hee-keun, commissioner general of the National Police Agency, denied that the police handling led to Lee's death but vowed to review and amend investigation practices if necessary.
