Seoul Reports Zuckerberg’s Strategic Meetings with Samsung and LG Leaders

SEOUL — Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg engaged in pivotal discussions with top executives from Samsung Electronics Co. and LG Electronics Co., centering on advancing cooperation in artificial intelligence (AI) and extended reality (XR) technologies.

According to Yonhap News Agency, Zuckerberg, who is also the CEO of Meta Platforms Inc., the parent company of Facebook, dined with LG Electronics CEO Cho Joo-wan and other high-ranking officials from the South Korean tech giant on Wednesday to explore potential AI and XR collaborations.

The series of meetings included a dinner between Zuckerberg and Samsung Electronics Chairman Lee Jae-yong at a private reception hall used by the Samsung chairman for high-level discussions. Sources familiar with the matter indicated that the conversations focused on AI memory chips and the XR business sector. Zuckerberg’s visit to Seoul, which began on Tuesday, included several business engagements with leading figures in the industry, such as Cho and Lee, highlighting Meta’s initiative to develop its own artificial general intelligence (AGI) and a new AI chip.

Samsung Electronics, recognized as the leading memory chip manufacturer globally, has recently established an AGI research and development unit in Silicon Valley, marking a significant step towards innovation in AI technology. Zuckerberg's history of interactions with Samsung dates back to 2014 and includes a visit to the company's R&D lab in the United States in 2022.

The meeting with Cho from LG Electronics comes at a time when both companies have expressed a keen interest in XR technologies, deemed crucial for future innovation and market growth. At CES 2024, Cho highlighted LG's dedication to establishing partnerships to enhance its XR market presence. Meanwhile, Meta has launched its Quest 3 virtual reality headset, competing with Apple Inc.'s Vision Pro headset, which was introduced globally last month.

In addition to his engagements with Samsung and LG, Zuckerberg met with representatives from at least five AI and XR startups, including AI startup Upstage, in a private session at Meta Korea's office in Seoul. These meetings, arranged directly by Meta, underscore the company's ambition to lead in XR headset technology. Zuckerberg is also expected to meet with South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol before leaving for India on Thursday. However, Meta Korea has not confirmed any specific details of Zuckerberg's itinerary in Seoul.
