SEJONG — The South Korean government has reiterated its commitment to resolving the ongoing dispute with the medical community over the increase in medical school admission quotas, announced the health ministry on Monday.
According to Yonhap News Agency, efforts to mend relations with doctors will persist following last week’s approval by the Korean Council for University Education of the first quota increase in 27 years. The decision has led to significant protests from about 12,000 trainee doctors who have been on strike since February 20, causing disruptions in general hospitals and emergency rooms. Second Vice Health Minister Park Min-soo emphasized the government’s dedication to maintaining the emergency medical system and resolving the conflict during a government meeting. President Yoon Suk Yeol had previously urged that the quota increase be implemented without delay to reflect changes needed in the medical education sector.
