SEOUL — The ruling People Power Party (PPP) has agreed to chair seven parliamentary committees, ending a prolonged boycott of parliamentary sessions. This development follows a standoff with the main opposition Democratic Party (DP), which had previously taken unilateral actions in committee leadership assignments and the election of the Assembly speaker.
According to Yonhap News Agency, on Monday, the party accepted the DP’s proposal to take leadership of the national defense, strategy and finance, national policy, gender equality and family, industry and trade, foreign affairs and unification, and intelligence committees. This decision comes after the DP unilaterally elected 11 committee chiefs earlier in the month, including critical panels like the legislation and judiciary committee. The PPP had been boycotting parliamentary sessions in protest against these actions, causing the National Assembly to be idle for nearly a month.
