Tariff Tensions Escalate Between U.S. and China

Seoul: The top headlines in major South Korean newspapers have highlighted the intensifying tariff battle between the United States and China, with significant attention given to the escalating percentages of tariffs imposed by both countries.

According to Yonhap News Agency, the Kookmin Daily reported that U.S. tariffs on China have reached 145 percent, while China’s tariffs on the U.S. stand at 125 percent. This development is described as a “game of chicken” over tariffs, indicating the heightened tensions between the two economic giants.

The Donga Ilbo echoed this sentiment, characterizing the situation as a ‘game of chicken’ in the ongoing tariff war. The Chosun Ilbo highlighted what it describes as Trump’s three significant mistakes, noting that the market, prices, and the situation with China are moving in unexpected directions.

In a related report, the JoongAng Ilbo expressed concerns over the loss of trust in the U.S., suggesting that the tariffs imposed by the Trump administration could act as a detrimental factor. Meanwhile, the Hankook Ilbo covered China’s response, noting that China has raised its tariffs on the U.S. to 125 percent, with both nations continuing their retaliatory measures.

The Maeil Business Newspaper shifted focus slightly, reporting on the domestic market impact, where competition has intensified among 6,000 companies dealing in health functional foods. The Korea Economic Daily pointed out the adverse effects of the tariff policies, suggesting that they could undermine the U.S. dollar’s hegemony.

These headlines reflect the broader economic implications of the U.S.-China trade conflict, as reported by various South Korean newspapers.
