WASHINGTON-- U.S. President Donald Trump asked his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping Wednesday to use "all available levers" to stop North Korea's provocations.

Trump made the request while speaking by phone with Xi a day after North Korea launched what it claimed was its most powerful ballistic missile capable of striking all parts of the U.S. mainland.

"President Trump underscored the determination of the United States to defend ourselves and our allies from the growing threat posed by the North Korean regime," the White House said in a statement.

"President Trump emphasized the need for China to use all available levers to convince North Korea to end its provocations and return to the path of denuclearization."
