Trump Considers Troop Reduction in Germany Amid Strained NATO Relations

Washington: U.S. President Donald Trump announced that the United States is contemplating a reduction of its military presence in Germany. A decision on this matter is expected in the near future, following his criticisms of European allies for insufficient support in the ongoing U.S.-Israeli conflict against Iran.

According to Yonhap News Agency, Trump's statement was made via a social media post, shortly after The Wall Street Journal reported that his administration is evaluating potential punitive measures against certain NATO members. These countries are viewed by Trump as not adequately supporting the United States during the conflict with Iran. In his post on Truth Social, Trump stated, "The United States is studying and reviewing the possible reduction of Troops in Germany, with a determination to be made over the next short period of time."

Currently, there are over 36,000 U.S. troops stationed in Germany. The suggestion of reducing this number comes amid rising tensions between the United States and Germany over their approaches to the Iranian conflict. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz recently commented on the situation, suggesting that Iran is "humiliating" the U.S. and criticizing Washington's strategy in negotiations with Tehran. Trump's response was swift, accusing Merz of being complacent about Iran's nuclear ambitions and dismissing his understanding of the situation.

The conflict with Iran has also led to Trump's dissatisfaction with NATO. He has repeatedly criticized its members for failing to provide naval assistance to secure the Strait of Hormuz, which Iran has effectively blocked with missile and drone strikes. Trump labeled NATO members as "cowards" and warned that the U.S. would remember their reluctance to support the military campaign against Iran.

In addition to his criticisms of European allies, Trump has also expressed frustration with South Korea, accusing it of not being supportive enough to the U.S., despite the significant American military presence there. Approximately 28,500 U.S. troops are stationed in South Korea as a deterrent against North Korean threats. The U.S. and South Korea have been working on modernizing their alliance, which may lead to changes in the U.S. military presence on the Korean Peninsula.
