WASHINGTON-- U.S. President Donald Trump said more "major sanctions" will be imposed on North Korea Wednesday in response to its latest ballistic missile launch.

"Just spoke to President XI JINPING of China concerning the provocative actions of North Korea," Trump wrote on Twitter. "Additional major sanctions will be imposed on North Korea today. This situation will be handled!"

It was not immediately clear who would impose the new sanctions. North Korea on Tuesday launched what it claimed was its most powerful ballistic missile capable of striking all parts of the U.S. mainland.

Trump also asked Xi to use "all available levers" to stop North Korea's provocations.

"President Trump underscored the determination of the United States to defend ourselves and our allies from the growing threat posed by the North Korean regime," the White House said in a statement.

"President Trump emphasized the need for China to use all available levers to convince North Korea to end its provocations and return to the path of denuclearization."
