Twins Ace Prioritizes Team Victory Over Personal Milestone

Seoul: Twins ace Lachlan Wells narrowly missed achieving his first career complete game shutout on Wednesday night at Jamsil Baseball Stadium, Seoul, as the LG Twins faced off against the Hanwha Eagles. Despite his stellar performance, the team opted to bring in closer You Young-chan to secure a 3-0 victory.

According to Yonhap News Agency, Wells efficiently utilized his four-pitch mix to keep one of the Korea Baseball Organization's (KBO) leading offensive teams at bay. He threw only 84 pitches over eight innings, allowing just one hit and striking out a season-high seven batters. However, the Twins chose not to let Wells finish the game, prioritizing the team's win over individual achievement.

Wells expressed his desire to continue pitching in the ninth inning, noting, "I haven't had a complete game shutout before, so it's something that obviously is a pretty cool achievement." Despite his personal ambitions, Wells emphasized the importance of putting the team in a position to win, which they successfully accomplished.

The left-hander was close to achieving a "Maddux," a baseball statistic named after Hall of Famer Greg Maddux, denoting a complete game shutout with fewer than 100 pitches. Despite his request to pitching coach Kim Kwang-sam to continue, the decision was made to rest Wells.

Twins manager Youm Kyoung-youb later explained the rationale, stating, "His pitch count was already past 80, and we felt he'd be just as tired as if he had thrown over 100 pitches. The season is long, and we have a lot more games left."

Despite the Eagles' standing as one of the top offensive teams in the KBO, Wells' pitching stifled their efforts, allowing only a single hit and placing a runner in scoring position once. His strategic game plan, developed with catcher Park Dong-won and coach Kim, was executed flawlessly.

Although originally acquired to serve as a versatile reliever, Wells found himself in the starting rotation due to an injury to starter Son Ju-young. Wells has consistently delivered strong performances, not allowing more than two runs in any of his four starts.

With another starter, Yonny Chirinos, sidelined due to an elbow injury, Wells' position in the rotation is expected to remain secure for the near future. Nonetheless, Wells remains committed to adapting his role for the benefit of the team, stating, "As long as I can go out there and do my job in any role and we win games, that's all that matters."
