U.S.-Based Joint Battery Venture of SK On and Hyundai Motor Gets New Name

Bartow county: SK On Co. has given its U.S. battery joint venture with Hyundai Motor Group the name Hyundai-SK Battery Manufacturing America (HSBMA), according to the South Korean battery manufacturer Friday. The announcement marks a significant step in the collaboration between the two companies as they gear up for future operations.

According to Yonhap News Agency, SK On's LinkedIn post confirmed that the joint venture has officially adopted HSBMA as its name. This development was shared via SK On's social media channel, highlighting the partnership's progress since its establishment was announced in April 2023.

The plant, located in Bartow County, Georgia, represents a substantial investment of USD 5 billion and is poised to begin commercial operations within the year. Construction is currently reported to be over 90 percent complete. The facility is set to have an annual production capacity of 35 gigawatt-hours (GWh), sufficient to power approximately 300,000 electric vehicles (EVs).

Battery cells produced at HSBMA will be supplied to Hyundai Mobis Co. for battery packs intended for EVs manufactured by Hyundai Motor Co., Kia Corp., and Genesis in the United States. The strategic location of the plant offers logistical advantages, being in proximity to Hyundai Motor Group Metaplant America (HMGMA), Kia's Georgia factory, and Hyundai Motor's Alabama plant.

SK On is currently a supplier of batteries for key models within the Hyundai Motor Group, including Hyundai's Ioniq 5, Kia's EV6 and EV9, and Genesis' GV60. The collaboration with HSBMA is expected to further expand the supply chain with increased production capacities at HMGMA.
