INCHEON, Police have booked an American soldier without physical detention for allegedly stopping a car while jaywalking across a street in Incheon, west of Seoul, and then using violence against its driver, officials said Wednesday.

The 23-year-old private first class, who belongs to a U.S. military unit in Pyeongtaek, is accused of punching the driver in the face on an Incheon street around 2:30 p.m. on Monday. The violence happened as the driver complained about the soldier stopping his car while jaywalking.

Before crossing the street, the soldier also allegedly attempted to injure himself with a pair of scissors. That led police to conduct alcohol and drug tests on him, but no suspicious results were found, officials said.

After questioning the soldier, police handed over him to the U.S. military police.
