SEOUL - "12.12: The Day," a historical film about the 1979 military coup in South Korea, has reached its break-even point, drawing over 1.7 million viewers over the weekend. The movie's success has been confirmed by data released on Monday by the Korean Film Council.

According to Yonhap News Agency, the film's cumulative ticket sales have now exceeded the break-even point of 4.6 million since its release on November 22. The movie has rapidly gained popularity, hitting the 1 million sales marks just four days after its release and reaching 3 million sales by the 10th day. Notably, ticket sales during its second weekend were higher than the first, indicating strong and growing public interest, fueled by positive reviews from both critics and audiences.

"12.12: The Day" is inspired by true events and narrates the intense nine-hour standoff between Chun Doo-kwang, head of the Defense Security Command orchestrating a coup, and Capital Defense Commander Lee Tae-shin, who valiantly opposes the coup. The film's success is being seen as a potential indicator of it becoming a blockbuster, possibly surpassing 10 million ticket sales.
