Seoul: Sogang University in Seoul has fallen victim to a hacking incident resulting in the leakage of approximately 180,000 personal records belonging to students, alumni, faculty, and other affiliates, as reported by university officials. Notably, former President Park Geun-hye is believed to be among those whose information has been compromised.
According to Yonhap News Agency, the breach was confirmed following an external attack targeting the university's integrated login account information. Leaked data encompasses student ID numbers, names, affiliations, mobile phone numbers, and passwords. The attack was identified by school officials on Friday, three days post-incident.
In response to the breach, the university has blocked the IP address implicated in the hack, implemented emergency procedures, and notified both the Personal Information Protection Commission and the education ministry. An official from the university stated that emergency measures have been executed and current efforts are focused on identifying vulnerabilities within the internal server. The university is collaborating with an external cybersecurity firm to enhance system monitoring and prevent further breaches.
Former President Park Geun-hye, who earned her electronics engineering degree from Sogang University in 1974, is believed to be affected by the breach. Her student ID, previously disclosed during her 2007 presidential campaign, when entered into a designated website for checking data leaks, indicates her information has been compromised.
