SEOUL — South Korean authorities have referred 29 individuals to the prosecution on Wednesday for their alleged involvement in a drug prescription scandal connected to former professional baseball player Oh Jae-won. This group includes nine current players from the Doosan Bears baseball team.
According to Yonhap News Agency, the accused allegedly used their identities to obtain prescriptions for psychotropic substances like zolpidem tartrate, which were then delivered to Oh. Additionally, etomidate, an anesthetic, was reportedly supplied by some individuals involved. The group includes 13 former and current professional baseball players, with a significant portion still active in the sport. A baseball trainer and the head of a Seoul-area hospital, who is accused of selling etomidate illegally, are also implicated. The investigation revealed Oh may have started using these substances in early 2020, during his active sports career. Oh was previously indicted in March on charges of illegal drug use and related violence, prompting a broader investigation into those supplying him with restricted medications.
