SEOUL — The Democratic Party (DP) has vocally opposed President Yoon Suk Yeol's recent nomination of Lee Jin-sook, a former journalist at MBC, to head the Korea Communications Commission (KCC). The opposition's reaction comes amidst heightened political tensions over control of the media.
According to Yonhap News Agency, During a Supreme Council meeting on Friday, DP floor leader Park Chan-dae questioned the appropriateness of Lee's nomination, given her controversial background in public broadcasting. Park called for President Yoon to withdraw Lee's nomination, accusing him of attempting to influence media control through strategic appointments. The nomination, announced on Thursday, follows the voluntary resignation of former KCC Chairman Kim Hong-il, who stepped down to avoid a potential impeachment vote led by the opposition. The KCC plays a critical role in the oversight of broadcasting stations, and the chairman's position is particularly influential, notably involving senior appointments at major broadcasters like MBC TV. The DP, holding a majority in the Assembly, has criticized the administration for operating the KCC without a full complement of commissioners, alleging unfair management practices.
