INCHEON - Budget airlines in South Korea have successfully restored their check-in and booking systems following a global technical outage that disrupted services for approximately 12 hours, affecting sectors across IT and finance worldwide.
According to Yonhap News Agency, three low-cost carriers—Jeju Air Co., Eastar Jet Co., and Air Premia Inc.—had their systems back online by 3:30 a.m. Saturday. The outage led to the delay of 92 flights, impacting both domestic and international travel at Incheon Airport and two other domestic airports, where a total of 13 foreign flights experienced delays or cancellations.
The global tech outage, traced back to a software glitch at cybersecurity firm Crowdstrike, caused crashes in Microsoft's Windows operating systems utilized by the three affected airlines. Beyond aviation, the outage also impacted South Korean online gaming companies. Pearl Abyss, developers of "Black Desert," reported server instability due to equipment failures, and Gravity Co., which operates the popular role-playing game "Ragnarok," also faced disruptions.
