SEOUL — Facing intense scrutiny and accusations of favoritism, the Korea Football Association (KFA) has publicly defended its decision to appoint Hong Myung-bo as the head coach of the national men's football team, insisting that the selection process was transparent and fair.
According to Yonhap News Agency, the organization posted a detailed chronology and a Q&A on its website to clarify the steps leading to Hong Myung-bo's appointment. This move comes after criticisms arose over the hiring process, particularly regarding the lack of extensive interviews or presentations required from Hong compared to foreign candidates. The KFA explained that its familiarity with Hong's coaching philosophy and prior achievements in the K League made additional materials unnecessary.
The controversy began after the KFA, which had been searching for a new coach since the dismissal of Jurgen Klinsmann in February, appeared to pivot suddenly from considering several foreign coaches to appointing Hong. Critics argue this decision was predetermined and accuse the KFA of conducting a superficial search to ultimately appoint a candidate favored by KFA chief, Chung Mong-gyu. This criticism was further fueled by former National Teams Committee member Park Joo-ho, who expressed his surprise and disappointment over the selection process in a widely viewed YouTube video.
In response to the public outcry, the sports ministry has initiated an audit of the KFA's operations. Meanwhile, the KFA maintains that the selection was based on Hong's proven track record, including leading Ulsan HD FC to consecutive K League 1 championships, and his vision for the national team, which was sufficiently discussed in a pivotal meeting with KFA technical director Lee Lim-saeng.
As Hong Myung-bo prepares for his new role, he is currently traveling in Europe to scout potential assistant coaches and meet with key South Korean players abroad, such as Son Heung-min and Kim Min-jae, to discuss future strategies and team dynamics.
