SEOUL—In a landmark achievement, the K-pop industry's overseas sales exceeded 1 trillion won ($722.28 million) in 2023, marking a significant milestone in its global expansion.
According to Yonhap News Agency, The Korea Culture and Tourism Institute, operating under the culture ministry, highlighted in their report that total industry revenue hit approximately 1.2377 trillion won last year, reflecting a 34.3 percent increase from 2022. This surge is the first instance of K-pop revenues crossing the trillion-won threshold, propelled by robust performances in album exports, streaming services, and international concerts. The largest revenue stream came from overseas performances, which contributed 47.5 percent of the total revenue. Album exports followed, comprising 31.4 percent, with streaming services accounting for the remaining 21 percent. Notably, the return to normalcy post-COVID-19 in 2023 saw a dramatic 65.6 percent rise in revenue from international performances, and a significant 7.6-fold increase in album exports since 2017.
The report also forecasts further growth in 2024, driven by market diversification, the emergence of new artists, and ongoing global outreach efforts.
