SEOUL — The Democratic Party (DP), South Korea's main opposition party, announced plans on Wednesday to propose an impeachment motion against Lee Jin-sook, the newly appointed chief of the Korea Communications Commission (KCC). This decision comes shortly after her controversial inauguration earlier in the day.
According to Yonhap News Agency, the issue stems from Lee's immediate scheduling of a meeting to appoint new directors at the Foundation for Broadcast Culture, which could influence leadership at MBC TV station. The DP contends that holding this meeting with only two of the KCC's standing committee's five members present violates legal protocols. This move follows a pattern of vacancies and resignations within the KCC under the current administration, including the voluntary departure of former chairperson Kim Hong-il and acting chairperson Lee Sang-in after facing similar impeachment threats. The opposition has criticized the Yoon Suk Yeol administration's handling of the KCC, accusing it of making unilateral decisions without a full committee. The impeachment motion is set to be submitted later today and brought to a plenary session on Thursday.
