PARIS — South Korea claimed the silver medal in the women's sabre fencing team event at the Paris Olympics on Saturday, succumbing to Ukraine in the final stages of a closely contested match.
According to Yonhap News Agency, the match concluded with a score of 45-42 at the Grand Palais, favoring Ukraine, the world's third-ranked team, over fourth-ranked South Korea. The South Korean team, comprised of Jeon Eun-hye, Jeon Ha-young, Choi Se-bin, and alternate Yoon Ji-su, was poised to win the country's first gold medal in this event. South Korea previously secured a bronze in the 2021 Tokyo Olympics, with Yoon Ji-su being the sole member from that squad competing in Paris.
The final moments were dramatic, as South Korea entered the ninth and last bout with a three-point lead at 40-37. However, Ukraine's Olga Kharlan overturned the deficit by outscoring Jeon Ha-young 8-2, sealing the victory for Ukraine and thwarting South Korea's gold medal aspirations.
