SEOUL - President Yoon Suk Yeol has appointed Shim Woo-jung, the current vice justice minister, as the new prosecutor general, marking a significant leadership change in the nation’s prosecution service.
According to Yonhap News Agency, Shim, 53, will succeed Prosecutor General Lee One-seok, whose two-year term concludes next month. Shim's extensive experience in the judiciary, which includes roles at the Seoul Central District Prosecutors' Office since 2000, and various senior positions within the Seoul prosecutors' office, the justice ministry, and the Supreme Prosecutors Office, underscores his readiness for the top prosecutorial role.
Chung emphasized Shim’s deep understanding of criminal procedures and the prosecution system, noting his strong commitment to the rule of law. Shim's appointment is seen as pivotal in ensuring the prosecution's role in upholding the Constitution and protecting citizens' rights. Following a parliamentary confirmation hearing, Shim will officially become the second prosecutor general under the Yoon administration.
