Seoul—Approximately ten civic groups dedicated to honoring Korean independence fighters have demanded the resignation of Kim Hyoung-suk, the newly appointed director of the Independence Hall of Korea. During a press conference held at Gwanghwamun Square, these groups denounced Kim as unsuitable for the role, citing his controversial views on historical issues.
According to Yonhap News Agency, Kim is criticized for his stance on the constitutional provision recognizing South Korea's inheritance of the legal traditions from the Korean provisional government, along with allegedly defaming Korean independence fighters and defending pro-Japanese collaborators. They assert that his views disqualify him from leading the Independence Hall of Korea, a memorial space dedicated to reflecting on the nation's history of foreign invasions. The opposition came to a head earlier this week when the main opposition Democratic Party joined the chorus of disapproval, urging President Yoon Suk Yeol to rescind Kim's appointment and threatening to boycott the upcoming Liberation Day ceremonies unless their demand is met.
