JEJU - A fire erupted aboard an 85,000-ton cruise ship moored at the port of Jeju, resulting in injuries to three crew members, authorities reported.
According to Yonhap News Agency, smoke was observed rising from the Mediterranea cruise ship at approximately 8:37 a.m. on Wednesday. The ship, which had arrived from Tianjin, China earlier that day, was carrying 3,166 individuals, including 2,430 passengers and 736 crew members. The fire, which affected roughly 50 square meters of the ship’s machine room, including the ceiling and pipes, was quickly suppressed by the vessel’s sprinkler system. Three crew members received immediate medical attention for smoke inhalation. The Jeju Coast Guard is currently investigating the precise cause of the incident and has stated that the ship’s scheduled departure for Fukuoka, Japan, will depend on the outcome of a safety inspection by maritime officials.
