South Korea and China Set to Launch Friendship Forum in Beijing to Strengthen Bilateral Ties

SEOUL: South Korea and China will initiate a new "friendship forum" aimed at enhancing bilateral relations through increased dialogue and cooperation. This development comes as part of a broader effort to mend and mature ties between the two nations, amidst recent strains. The forum is set to launch in Beijing this Thursday, involving key government officials and experts from the private sector of both countries. According to Yonhap News Agency, Seoul's foreign ministry, the establishment of the South Korea-China Friendship Forum follows an agreement made during the November 2022 summit between the leaders of the two countries. The forum is designed as a dialogue channel to explore effective strategies to bolster the relationship and incorporate these strategies into policymaking. "Our delegation plans to have broad discussions with the Chinese side on efforts to develop the Korea-China relationship into one that is healthier and more mature," stated the ministry in a recent release. During a luncheon with the South Korean delegation, Foreign Minister Cho Tae-yul expressed optimism about the forum's potential to generate creative ideas and foster open discussions on the future of Korea-China relations. This initiative marks a significant step for Seoul in improving relations with Beijing, which has been its largest trading partner and a crucial participant in dealing with North Korea. The announcement also coincides with the appointment of Kim Dae-ki, former chief of staff to President Yoon, as the next ambassador to China, signaling a forward-moving trajectory in diplomatic engagements.
